Faculty Experts
The Department has a number of research centres and faculty experts in microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, experimental economics, health economics, international economics, labour economics, monetary economics, population economics and public economics. Much of their research is applied to policy issues and utilizes advanced quantitative techniques.
Some of our areas of strength include:
Health Economics
Health economics draws together the ideas and tools of various fields of economics such as econometrics, public finance, labour market economics, and industrial organization. These are combined with sector-specific institutional knowledge to study and contribute policy advice regarding health and health care systems.
Macroeconomics
Macroeconomics is the study of the economy as a whole, confronting the boom and bust of the business cycle and the determinants of long-term growth and economic development. It addresses the policy choices of governments and central banks and is closely tied with monetary and financial issues. It also overlaps with international economics issues such as exchange rates and trade policy.
Applied Microeconomics
Applied microeconomics takes economic theories and applies them to key questions of individual behaviour and societal outcomes. Drawing on diverse sources of data, it can tackle big questions in areas such as labour markets, taxation and public spending, and industrial organization.
Econometrics
Econometrics uses statistical tools to quantify economic phenomena. It allows us to assess theoretical economic models empirically, turning abstract ideas into useful tools for economic policymaking. As such, it is fundamental to all areas of empirical economics.
